Robyn Angliss

I started racing mountain bikes A) so there would always be enough people on the trail to intimidate nearby mountain lions, B) it sounded like fun, and C) everybody looked so happy when they were racing.  I found out quickly that those were grimaces, not grins, but by then I was hooked.   Now, several years later, I try to plan my work/life schedule around my favorite mountain bike and cyclocross races.  I have a definite preference for dirt over pavement, but I adore long road rides, particularly when I can combine pretty scenery, a quiet road, and good company.

I began riding a bike at age five and it was my escape to better things as a child. I then began racing triathlon and loved the bike discipline the best. I have been an active competitive person in sports since 1983 (my first race). I then signed on for volunteering for the Mutual of Enumclaw Stage Race in 2002 and have been hooked ever since in wanting to race bicycles. I'm looking forward to time trialing in 2009 and Blue Rooster has the best team ever.

I've enjoyed riding bikes for as long as I can remember, and I have a vivid memory of my dad teaching me to ride my first two-wheeler on a lonely stretch of road in a suburb of Pittsburgh: a hot pink schwinn with a banana seat, flower basket, and streamers. No training wheels for this gal! After moving to Seattle I began riding regularly with a group of racer guy friends, caught the racing bug myself; I have been addicted ever since! I've been racing since 1999. I'm especially fond of time trials - I've been both the Washington and Oregon time trial champion. When not riding, racing, or working, I enjoy reading, beading, and renovating/rehabbing my circa 1906 home. I was born in Augusta, GA, grew up in Pittsburgh, PA, lived in Washington,DC, for a long period of time, and have now settled in Seattle, where I've lived since 1996.

After many years of racing primarily on the road I became hooked on the fast speeds of track racing at the Marymoor Velodrome in Redmond. I raced almost every Wednesday and Friday night last season, mixing it up with the women and also hopping in the men's races.

I like to race aggressively and to attack when least expected. I think that makes it more exciting for the spectators. I like to race hard and have fun!

I have been on the team with my husband for one year. Prior to that, my racing experience has been on mountain bike rides chasing my husband through the woods. After having our second child he asked what would make ME happy regarding my own recreation "Meeting some other women who love to ride!". I am a happy girl when I am on a bike feeling the terrain changing under my wheels, smell the fresh NW air, and am learning how to ride better and better. Mountain biking is my first love (which I share with my husband) cross is my new passion, and road is a necessary transportation mode - I get thrills when I pass a car waiting in traffic. I also get so excited watching and cheering on teammates with my kids.

Initially saddened to receive a new 10-speed bicycle for my 12th birthday instead of a horse, I found out quickly that a bike was the preferred way to get around on the island where I grew up. I still get around mostly on my bike, but drive when I need to carry a canoe or kayak to the river or to free up my heels on the slopes. I love cyclocross because it hurts so good! I actually like to run up hill. Heaven for me is going into a corner with perfect speed and accelerating even faster out of it. It doesn't matter if it is on pavement or dirt, this is my addiction. MY two big racing goals for '09 are to accrue the points required to upgrade to a Cat 2 in 'cross and to become technically proficient enough to be competitive in the Sport category on my mountain bike. I live in Seattle with my two cats and am ever hopeful that the younger one will learn a trick so cool that it will make me rich

I started with the team in 1991. After two years I decided to try cyclocross at the urging of Tim Rutledge, my then coach. So I started to go to workouts with Tim's buddies, Craig Undem, Dale Knapp and Tim's wife Heather. Gee who could have asked for better coaches...I was able to compete one more year before my sciatica got so bad I could barely ride anymore. I started going to the big races with the guys as support and hung out with the officials. They convinced me to become a race official since I was already at all the races. Hence I am still a race official today.

In 1995 Pat Carroll our team President and his college Buddy Dale Bradbury came up with the idea for the Mutual of Enumclaw Stage Race. I was the assistant race director that year, and the registration coordinator and the volunteer coordinator and the caravan coordinator and the permits. I ran the race for 12 more years after that. Upon retiring from Race director in 2007, I upped the anty with the WSBA and continue on as Treasurer of the WSBA which I have been doing since 2000. I am also in charge of the WSBA Junior Mtn and Cyclecross camp for 10 - 14 year olds each year.

When asked about cycling, my first words are… this is ALL my husband's fault! I didn't even ride for recreation prior to moving to Washington in 2003. After watching one season of 'Cross (2004), I was hooked! I now look forward to the lung-burning, snot-producing, euphoric madness that comes ONLY after 45 minutes of self-induced agony.

I have been a road bike rider for many years mainly for training in the off season for skiing. After having my boys I decided to train for sprint triathlons knowing that the bike segment would be my strongest link. I was introduced to cross racing by a friend three seasons ago but got more serious about it the past two seasons. This is now a "sick" passion for me. I love the start to finish action and pushing the limits of my fitness. I'm hoping to gain more strength, endurance and experience through road racing and training with a team.

Chasing my toddler around everyday is great exercise but it does lack competition so I decided to take up bike racing. My experience running marathons and rock climbing gave me the confidence to take up a new sport and after my first year of racing I upgraded to Cat. 3. My favorite part of bike racing is working with teammates during a race.

I started mountain biking last year as a trade off for teaching my husband (then boyfriend) to rock climb. I immediately fell in love with the sport and we have spent much more time mountain biking than rock climbing in the last two years. After being introduced to the Wednesday Night World Championships (the gateway drug of bike racing on dirt), we got hooked on cross and then cross country racing. We joined the team in spring 2009 for the camaraderie and support at races. It's awesome to have other women to ride with and such a fantastic and supportive team. Although I still have occasional "beginner moments" where I refuse to ride over some obstacle or completely freak out about a descent, racing has made those rare and riding with other women has definitely helped my skill set enormously. After a strong season in the beginner mountain bike category, I am looking forward to being competitive in cat 4 cross this year.

I started seriously riding bikes 2 years ago when I was skiing with Doug Mercer. I mentioned doing triathlons and how I wanted to work on biking, which was my weakest leg, and he recommended that I join the team. And now I love it! I have met so many great people through the team to train with. The sport is also way different from my usual, individual endurance sport repertoire. It makes me much more social. I'm looking forward to working hard with my new bike this season and getting some more races under my belt; And of course having tons of fun!!

On the more personal side , I am an undergrad at the University of Washington studying Chemical Engineering, hopefully going to do some sort of environmental or energy related job when I get out. Those other individual sports I mentioned before are running, swimming, triathlons, and cross country skiing. But I pretty much like doing anything that lets me be outside.
